Remember how to be safe when you're hanging out.
Posted By McGruff on January 25, 2007

Sometimes bad things happen close to home. When you’re hanging out in your neighborhood, remember how to be safe.
  • Always let your parents know where you are.
  • If anyone, even a friend, offers you drugs or tries to get you to do something you don't want to do, don't do it.
  • Remember the rules about strangers: don't talk to them, don't go anywhere with them, and don't take anything from them.

If someone from a gang asks you to join, say no!

Gang members sometimes ask kids to join. They say that the gang is cool and that the gang will keep the kid safe. This isn’t true! Gangs are dangerous and illegal! If someone asks you to join a gang, say no and tell a trusted adult.

Sometimes people act like bullies to get other people to do what they want. If someone is bullying you, remember what to do:
  • Stick with your friends.
  • Walk away from the bully.
  • Ask an adult for help.

Be careful about gangs!

A gang is a group that tries to control some part of a neighborhood and does illegal things there. Gangs are dangerous and hurt people. Avoid them!
